They had a beautiful banquet the final night. Everyone got to sign a copy of the Declaration, received a medal, and they had a very special passing of the torch of freedom ceremony that is beyond description (I'll have to try to find a video)!

The golfball was an important part of the week. It represented your character. The idea was that your character is easy to lose and hard to get back just like the golfball. The golfball must be in your hand AT ALL TIMES! If it is anywhere else or you drop it, it can be "stolen" by other students. If you lose your golfball at the next meal you must recite a character quote previously given to you by the PA staff. If you can't remember the quote, didn't memorize a quote, or lost your golfball more than once you had to sing "Oh Where Is My Golfball?" to the tune of "Oh Where Is My Hairbrush?" from Veggie Tales. This was such a good visual reminder for me and made me think harder about things before I said or did them because I wanted to have good character. Feeling that golfball in my hand all day every day was a good reminder about how easy it is to lose your character. It has been so weird to not have it in my hand since I got home!
Patriot Academy was a truly amazing experience for me! I honestly can't put it into words! For those of you who know me, you know I'm a political junkie! Patriot Academy showed me how much I did not know about politics. I was so nervous when I first got there. I'm not very good at public speaking and I was scared to death to present my bill in committee! The alumni were very encouraging and helpful and the more I got to know people, the more relaxed I began to feel! It pushed me hard and got me well out of my comfort zone, but by the end of it I was much more confident, felt more prepared, and was looking forward to presenting my bill on the floor! I wasn't ready for it to end! I felt like I was just getting started and wanted to soak in more, but I feel like I can pick right back up next year! I would encourage everyone to go! If you're a political junkie, it will strengthen, encourage, inspire, equip, and teach you so much (and there are some amazing internships you can participate in)! If you're not, you should still go, because you will still learn a lot (the principles can be applied in your every day life or workplace) and be greatly encouraged by the students!
